The Cost of Missed States: Online Tracking with Current-Observation Resets is now available on arXiv.
The public study
The model retains one state and permits resets only to the current observation, while keeping the full observed history available. Offline obeys the same reset restriction. Even on a fixed five-point metric, randomized online policies can require an expected number of refreshes that grows linearly with the horizon while offline needs only two.
The paper also gives cost upper bounds for threshold policies that adapt to observed path variation. The 12-page paper has four figures; code and synthetic data are available in the public repository.
